The Women Following Jesus

Tucked away in Mark 15:40-41, we find these verses, “There were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. In Galilee these women followed him [Jesus] and took care of him. Many other women had come up with him to Jerusalem.”

These verses have a deep connection to words used in two other verses in Mark. The Greek word translated “took care of him” is the same same word found in Mark 1:13. The angels “were serving” Jesus after the wilderness temptation. In Mark 10:45 Jesus described His mission this way “… to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”1 Again, when the women took care of Jesus, they served Him as the angels did and the way He served mankind. That is no small concept!

Some of these biblical women’s names are familiar to us. But most who had served Jesus in Galilee are like many of us—ordinary, hardworking, and not widely known. When we serve Jesus and others, we are connected to these brave and practical women.

Challenge: Serve Jesus like the angels served Him.

Claudean Boatman learned to serve Jesus from those women in her childhood who served Him well. Claudean earned a Master of Theological Studies from Gateway Seminary, Rocky Mountain Campus (Denver area), in 2023. Find out more at claudeanboatman.com.
