Love God with all Your Heart

I remember what it was like as my husband and I realized we loved each other. We wanted to spend every waking moment together. We set aside all non-essentials in favor of getting to know each other. What a magnificent experience!

Even so, I prefer what we have now—a deep love not dependent on changing emotions.

A religious leader approached Jesus (Mark 12:28) and asked, “Which command is the most important of all?” Jesus’ answer came right from the Old Testament passage known as the Shema (hear). Jesus said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30). Jesus leaves no doubt; it is not a suggestion. Jesus told the religious leader who and how to love. He told us, too.

We are to love the Lord our God. We aren’t to love substitutes for the One True God, whether false gods or gods of our own making. We love God when we spend time with Him, and get to know His mind, His ways, and what makes Him smile.

Challenge: Get to know the Lord your God and love Him deeply.

Claudean Boatman and her husband recently celebrated 39 years of marriage and credit loving God as the reason they love each other well. Claudean earned a Master of Theological Studies from Gateway Seminary, Rocky Mountain Campus (Denver area), in 2023.
