A conservative group, Rescue California announced Monday that Governor Gavin Newsom (D) was served with a notice of intent to recall him. The press release indicated it was time to “rescue California” and “save America” starting with recalling the Golden State’s governor.

Anne Dunsmore, Rescue California Campaign Director, accused Newsom of abandoning the state to further his presidential ambitions, while leaving behind a $73 billion budget deficit and a public safety, immigration and education crisis in his wake.

“Over 400 Californians of every political persuasion and from all walks of life,” Dunsmore said, “have joined together to serve as official proponents of this recall.

This is the second recall effort the deep-blue Democrat has been subject to. In 2021, nearly 5 million Californian’s voted to remove him. He survived by outspending recall proponents by over 20-1.

The recall proponents painted a clear portrait of their grievances with the governor, who has two years and three budgets remaining before the end of his term, indicating he:

  • Granted 700,000 illegal immigrants free health care at $3 billion annually, while programs that aid veterans, school children, the disabled and homeless were slashed.
  • During COVID-19 he kept schools closed longer than other states forcing California students into learning deficits in basic skills, like language and mathematics.
  • Closed prisons and ordered the release of thousands of criminals into the public.
  • Weakened public safety laws, which have promoted a smash-and-grab crime culture wreaking havoc across the state.
  • Forcing Californians to suffer the highest taxes in the nation and the highest home prices outside of Hawaii while he undermines Proposition 13 – which requires assessment of each taxable property based on its fair market value and limits a property owner’s general levy tax to 1 percent of the assessed value.
  • Spending billions on failed government homeless programs, leaving the state with the nation’s highest percentage of homelessness.

Dunsmore emphasized California’s need for a “fill-time governor” who is focused on the “serious problems” the state and its citizens are facing. She added,

“This may be our last opportunity to rescue our state, while we highlight for the rest of the country the destruction Newsom has left in his wake.”

According to KCRA-NBC Channel 3, the governor will have 10 days to formally respond to the effort. A petition will start circulating seeking signatures to land the issue on the ballot. The proponents will need to gather enough valid signatures equaling 12% of the vote for Newsom in the last election by May.

Newsom commented on X Monday indicating the campaign was an effort by “Trump Republicans“to distract him.

“Trump Republicans are launching another wasteful recall campaign to distract us from the existential fight for democracy and reproductive freedom,” Newsom said. “We will defeat them.”

Dunsmore responded, telling KCRA 3, “No governor, California is coming after you and it’s going to make the last recall effort look like a sandbox.”
