The filmmaking tandem behind the faith-based movies “War Room” and “Courageous” have released a teaser trailer for their next movie, “Overcomer,” which will hit theaters in August 2019 and spotlight the believer’s identity in Christ.
The 90-second trailer includes cast members Priscilla Shirer (“War Room,” “I Can Only Imagine”), Shari Rigby (“October Baby,” “Wildflower”), Cameron Arnett (“Meet The Browns,” “Stand Your Ground”) and newcomer Aryn Wright-Thompson.
Alex Kendrick — the film’s director — plays a basketball coach. His filmmaking brother, Stephen Kendrick, produced it.
The trailer “shares the movie’s theme of discovering who you are when everything you once valued is taken away,” according to a press release.
“Life changes overnight for basketball coach John Harrison and the high school where he and his wife teach when they learn the largest manufacturing plant in town is shutting down,” the plot summary reads.
“Uncertainty swirls as hundreds of families depart, leaving John fearful for the future of his family and his team. Forced to coach a sport he doesn’t even like, John is inspired by an unexpected friendship, and an unlikely athlete pushing her limits on a journey toward discovery. With newfound resolve and the support of the community, Hannah and her coach challenge the impossible in the biggest race of her life.”
The movie will be released by Affirm Films and Provident Films.
It is the sixth movie by the Kendrick brothers, who directed and produced “War Room,” “Courageous,” “Fireproof,” “Facing the Giants” and “Flywheel.”
“War Room” was the No. 1 movie at the box office on its second weekend in 2015.
Overcomer is scheduled to release Aug. 23.
