Women’s Midweek Reflection: See the Advent through Anna’s Eyes

Luke tells the story of Anna, a prophetess. She was, according to Luke 2:36, “well along in years.” Anna lived with her husband for seven years before becoming a widow and without her husband for 84 years.

Anna spent decades developing an intimate relationship with God. Luke 2:37 records, “She did not leave the temple, serving God night and day with fasting and prayers.” Anna invested herself, not in the service of the priests and people, but in the service of God. To the untrained eye, the two may look the same. The difference lies not in the what but in the how. Anna served with fasting and prayer. Fasting lends itself well to seeking God through prayer.

She knew God so well, she recognized Jesus, the long-awaited Messiah, instantly. Luke 2:38 tells us, “At that very moment, she came up and began to thank God and to speak about him to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.” Anna’s personal relationship with God motivated her to share the Savior freely with thanksgiving.

Oh, that we Christian women would pursue life as Anna did!

Challenge: Develop a deep relationship with God so you share Jesus with thanksgiving.
