University of Mobile Grad Sarah Thomas To Be First Female Referee at Super Bowl

by christiannewsjournal

University of Mobile graduate Sarah Thomas has made history again — this time as the first female official for a Super Bowl.

In 2007, Thomas, who played basketball at UM from 1992 to 1995, became the first woman to referee an NCAA Division I football game. In 2009, she served in that designation for a bowl game. Then in 2015, she became the NFL’s first full-time female game official.

On Feb. 7, she will be the down judge for Referee Carl Cheffers’ crew at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa for Super Bowl LV.

“Everything happens for a reason, and God’s hand is in it,” Thomas said of her career in a 2007 TAB article. “For whatever reason, He has blessed me to have good judgment and has just given me the talent to officiate.”
