Men on a Mission: Unforced Rhythms of Grace

While preparing for another busy week, my inner anxiety had the energy of a plasma globe, looking for a well-placed finger on the surface to direct the energy. For most of us, our perpetual busyness is often unrewarding and stressful and dilutes the attention available for our work. It is impossible to reflect on what truly matters.

I don’t often self-identify with women in the Bible, but when I do, it’s Mary and Martha, the two siblings of Luke, chapter 10.

I like to think of myself as sitting peacefully like Mary, absorbing every revelation Jesus shares; however, I am often way more like her sibling, whom Jesus rebuked for being pulled by all the distractions.

Everyone’s needs exasperated Martha, and she was responsible for meeting them all. Some suggest she was making sandwiches that Jesus never ordered. She even blamed Jesus for not telling Mary to help her. Jesus understood the power of focus and stewarding what truly matters in front of you in the moment.

“Learn the unforced rhythms of Grace,” he told a crowd of weary disciples. He taught them to reclaim their inner world for the Kingdom of Heaven, ruled by peace. “Are you tired? Worn out, burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me, and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me, and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” [Matt. 11:29-30 MSG]

What are you truly responsible for in your present season, and what do you need to release into the care and timing of the Lord? What can you take away from this story?
