As a member of President Donald Trump’s legal team, Jordan Sekulow, secured a successful acquittal in the impeachment trial. The Executive Director of the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) and cohost of Jay Sekulow Live!, told CNJ the fight wages on after the trial– now with the COVID-19 pandemic, more political theatrics, and bipartisanship. 2020 is proving to one for the history books–and not a good story at that.
The Political Drama Never Ends
Recently, and in an appropriate response, Jordan (and dad Jay Sekulow), called out House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for including taxpayer funding for abortion in the first Coronavirus stimulus package that reportedly postponed bipartisan commitment to help Americans. Democrats briefly obstructed a $2 trillion aid package in March.
House Majority Whip, James Clyburn (SC-6) of the Democratic Party, said the initial bill would allow for a “tremendous opportunity to restructure things to fit their vision.”
Their wish list included government renovation of the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, funding abortion, tax credits for solar energy and wind energy, green new socialism and new emissions standards for the airlines. “We have to do a deep dive into these bills, because of what happened last time,” said Sekulow.
A second stimulus bill is being worked on by Congress. An estimated $250 billion in funding for hospitals, local governments, food aid and help for small business owners is reportedly included. The second bill is expected to fail the House on April 9.
“People want to understand the legislation, understand what’s happening as best as possible, and utilize what’s being made available to them,” Sekulow emphasized. “We can’t take our eyes off the ball right now. That’s why organizations like us exist. Our job is to focus on what Congress is doing. We want bipartisanship to work, and it has to work in times like this. But for those extreme partisans like Pelosi, [she] holds bills up due to partisan politics.”
Sekulow also added that COVID-19 was on the radar well-before the trial of Trump. “The Senate was so focused on impeachment most of January, and going into the first week of February–it was the impeachment trial. They (leaders) were briefed on it (COVID-19) and the president talked about it in his State of the Union in February.”
No Americans win in the blame game. However, there has been a decrease in partisan politics at the national level because of the pandemic from both sides. But keep in mind, we do have an election coming up in the fall.
“Although our attention is not on politics right now, it will have to be at a certain point; we will have to choose our president coming up in the fall. People are still running for Senate; people are still running for Congress and state offices. “[Trump] understands how hard this is for businesses and it goes against all of his instincts to shutdown. He is carrying out what he said first, putting Americans first, health first and our survival first.”
Leadership
Sekulow believes people will see the president’s leadership capabilities during the crises. Once people get passed the upheaval of COVID-19 and find normalcy again, Trump will feasibly remain in office.
“I think the American people get that –the competency level to deal with something this massive, to get businesses (like Ford and GM) to do their part– I think that goes a long way for a lot of Americans.”
For rational people, “we all are in this pandemic together, regardless if you like the president or not,” said Sekulow.
Agreed.
Politics doesn’t need to enter the conversation, but of course, it did and will be moving forward.
Weaponizing COVID-19 or any crises is disheartening, regardless of the political party. Our leaders work for us, so they need to work together regardless of personal agendas. We do need to keep our eyes on the ball.
