Heartbreaking: Young Mom Killed by Stray Bullet While Reading the Bible to Her Baby

by christiannewsjournal

Some stories are so tragic they almost defy belief.

A young mother in Zion, Illinois, was killed by a stray bullet this past Sunday night while getting her seven-month-old daughter ready for bed by reading the Bible to her, according to Fox 32 Chicago.

Pray, pray, pray for this mother and her family.

Pray that God will give her grace and bring comfort to the entire family she left behind.

“She loved Jesus Christ with every fiber of her being.”

The mother was identified as Melanie Yates.

She was a 23-year-old registered nurse and was shot in the head around 9 p.m. while inside her home.

She passed away the next day at a local hospital.

“For my daughter to be shot in the head, she’s reading the Bible to her youngest 7-month-old daughter, getting ready for bed,” said Lam Calderon, the mother of Melanie Yates, as Fox News also noted. “It’s unreal.”

Yates leaves behind her husband and their two young children, the Lake & McHenry County Scanner reported.

As the Scanner also reported, Lake County Major Crime Task Force spokesman Christopher Covelli said police officers arrived and found evidence of several shots that had been fired near the roadway.

Yates does not appear to have been the intended target, authorities believe.

The woman’s brother, Stephan Calderon, shared on social media, “Everybody who knew Lanie knows she loved Jesus Christ with every fiber of her being. There is no doubt whatsoever that she is in heaven at this very moment. But we on earth miss her very dearly.”

He created a GoFundMe fundraiser to assist the Yates family in their time of need.

The Zion Police Department is still investigating the shooting.
