The Chinese Communist Party controls 600 American think tanks, businesses, activist groups, and politicians to control American government, Newsweek reports. Newsweek also notes that Intelligence Community Officials assessed that China ramped up attacks on President Trump through its propaganda network to sway the 2020 election for Joe Biden.
Additionally, Newsweek reports that China prefers Democrats over Republicans because they made the “greatest strides” in American affairs during the Obama Administration. Most of Biden’s current White House officials worked for President Obama.
During Trump’s Presidency, Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned that China likely compromised at least 23 U.S. governors and continued working to compromise more local politicians. In fact, just before Biden took office, the State Department shut down a Chinese Consulate in Texas over election interference. John C. Demers, then an assistant attorney general in the Department of Justice, told reporters “Houston was not chosen at random out of the consulates out there,” but rather because of election influence operations that spanned the multiple southern states.
The Chinese Communist Party also controls American Politics through the United Front, a Chinese Military campaign which Xi Jinping calls the “magic weapon” of Chinese influence in the U.S. The United Front worked with multiple state officials during the 2020 election to shut down election fraud audits following unprecedented reports of voter fraud across the country. Officials found on China’s payroll included Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, and former Maricopa County Recorder Adrian Fontes. Three officials in states where election counting experienced heavy anomalies.
However, the United Front isn’t just controlling local politicians. They have also infiltrated American schools and injected Chinese communist propaganda into k-12 classrooms across the country. The Chinese Communist Party accomplished this through “Confucius Institutes” and similar programs which create “Confucius Classrooms” that censor any negative facts about China and communism while simultaneously teaching lies about America.
Confucius Institutes also fund schools and universities to exert control over the textbooks and curriculums taught across America. China runs roughly 500 Confucius Classrooms in k-12 schools nationwide and 75 Confucius Institutes in colleges across the country.
China not only controls key state officials and education systems through the United Front but also uses American political lobbying firm Mercury Public Affairs to lobby Congress to support Chinese Communist Party interests in the House and Senate. In addition to Mercury Public Affairs, China has also hired at least 12 former politicians to lobby for Chinese intelligence companies such as Huawei.
In all, the Chinese Communist Party as funded more than 10,000 lobbying projects in the U.S. between 2005 and 2019. And this massive influence campaign now results in U.S. Politicians being twice as likely to sponsor bills that advance the Chinese Communist Party’s agenda.
Such pervasive influence by China into America’s political and educational system triggered the Director of National Intelligence and the FBI to assess China as a the biggest threat to America. FBI Director Christopher Wray stated “The greatest long-term threat to our nation’s information and intellectual property, and to our economic vitality, is the counterintelligence and economic espionage threat from China.”
Additionally, the FBI released a report exposing China’s efforts to influence American politics, stating “China’s efforts target businesses, academic institutions, researchers, lawmakers, and the general public and will require a whole-of-society response.”
Even the Director of National Intelligence took note, and in the 2021 Threat Assessment, stated “Beijing has been intensifying efforts to shape the political environment in the United States to promote its policy preferences, mold public discourse, pressure political figures whom Beijing believes oppose its interests, and muffle criticism of China on such issues as religious freedom and the suppression of democracy in Hong Kong.”
For a more in-depth look at the United Front and other Chinese control in American politics, a 39-page report written by the U.S.-China Economic Security and Review Commission discusses in-depth the inner workings of the United Front and Chinese influence in American politics.
